Swiss Trees

Location: Krinau, Switzerland

Introduction:

Our daughter loves animals. So, we booked a stay on a Swiss farm in northeastern Switzerland. It’s a beautiful area with lush green pastures and rolling hills topped with snow-capped mountains in the distance. We knew we were in farm country when we went to dinner the first night at a restaurant on a farm with calves, goats, rabbits and chickens adjacent to the outdoor dining tables that kept our daughter happily occupied while our food was prepared.

Sights Visited:

We mostly hung out on the farm. The one activity we sought out is Baumwipfelpfad Neckertal, a treetop park about half an hour from the farm. We spent a couple of hours there walking the treetop boardwalk, hiking their trail and playing on a nice wooden playground that included a zip line. We learned a lot about indigenous trees along the way. There also were a few marble runs to put our pink wooden marble to the test.

Play:

We broke up the three-hour car ride from the Swiss Alps to our Swiss Farm stay with a stop in Baar. There was a fairly good playground across the street from the Hotz-Rust bakery café where we had lunch.

We found a swell playground in Herisau that seemed to have it all including two zip lines. We took advantage of letting Adelaide play while one of us went grocery shopping in town.

Accommodation:

We stayed in a three-story converted barn at Dickens Airbnb in Krinau. It was rustic, spacious and spotless. The kitchen was adequate. There was a refrigerator but no freezer and no microwave. There was a washer but no drier. The animals included cows, calves, chickens, cats, kittens and a dog. We were constantly serenaded by the clanging of bells hanging from the cows’ necks.

Food And Drink:

We grabbed lunch on the way in followed by dinner at a traditional Swiss restaurant, Alpli Unterwasser, choosing schnitzel and sausage. We enjoyed it. Adelaide sampled the meats but then stuck to French fries. Our place was equipped with a Nespresso machine. So, we made double lungo’s for our morning coffees. We found the tap water to be drinkable but not as good as our last place. For what it’s worth, we’ve found Migros supermarkets to have the best selection for what we like in Switzerland.

Transportation System:

We continued our journey with our leased car. They say that no one ever washes a rental car. We broke that mold as our car got trashed with tree debris at our last stay. We previously washed it in France as it was covered in dust from driving on some dirt roads. We haven’t been all that impressed with the results of the painfully slow one-car at a time wash machines.

The host family supplied us with half a dozen fresh eggs. The German inscription on the cover translates to: “Eggs from Happy Chicken”. And you know what, we swear that they’re the best eggs that we’ve ever had except for Adelaide who said they didn’t taste like anything.
